Lesson Description

This guitar lesson has 6 chapters, but a couple of them are very long. The Performance shows you what we want to have you learn.  Notice the rapid-fire strumming. That’ll be yours when we’re done with you. The Overview tells you some of the fundamentals about the song history and structure, plus the chords you need to know. In the Verse Steve goes over the main Strum Pattern, doing the best he can to make this one of our easy song lessons. In the Chorus chapter you get another Strum Pattern, one that is a little more difficult but equally important. Here, the Beatles shifted from a backbeat to a syncopated rhythm. In the Instrumental chapter Steve shows you the accompaniment and the bass runs you’ll want to play on this part of the song. In the chapter on Section Endings you'll learn a terribly complicated-looking Strum Pattern full of rapid fire strums and stabs. In the Slow Practice you get a chance to put it all together by jamming with Teacher. For the Bonus Chapter Steve has rendered a simple and accessible arrangement of George’s great, but complicated, guitar solo.

"All My Loving," a song by The Beatles, was written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and released in the UK on the 1963 album With the Beatles and in the United States in 1964 on the album Meet The Beatles!  The song was immediately critically acclaimed with a large amount of radio air-play and peaked at #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"All My Loving" was conceived as a poem one day while McCartney was shaving, actually writing the lyrics before the music, which was rare for him.  He wrote the song as country/western song in the "letter" format also used in "P.S. I Love You."  The music was written on a backstage piano during The Beatles' Roy Orbison tour.

The Beatles recorded the song in July of 1963.  Paul McCartney played bass and sang lead and backing vocal, John Lennon, rhythm guitar and backing vocal, Ringo Starr, drums, and George Harrison, backing vocal and his Nashville-style solo on lead guitar.  During live performances, George and Paul sang harmony on the last verse of the song after the lead guitar solo, but in the studio version, Paul sang both parts.

"All My Loving" was recorded three times for BBC radio over 1963 and 1964.  Other Beatles albums including the song are: Anthology 1, Live at the BBC, and The Beatles 1962-1966.  An instrumental version appears in the movie Magical Mystery Tour and the song was also the band's opening number on its U.S. debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964.
