Lesson Description

This lesson has 10 chapters. The Performance shows you right away that we’re going to be demanding quite a bit of you here. That boogie-woogie pattern is an essential part of playing rock ‘n roll. In the Overview you get the song history, and you hear about the different versions that the Beatles recorded. In the Intro section Peter takes a lot of time to demonstrate and explain the boogie opening to the song.  In the Verse he drills you more on this “shuffle” technique and shows you how it applies as accompaniment to the singing. The next chapter, Verse Section 2, introduces the “Charleston Rhythm” pattern that the Beatles use on the second part of the verse. This is a percussive pattern that requires you to develop considerable right hand control. The next chapter is Verse Section 3. It is a complex rhythmic pattern that we decided not to chart it out because it looked too scary. Instead we’ve got Peter playing it for you and then repeating it over and over so that you get to learn by doing. Next comes the Slow Practice where you put it all together in a relaxed jam with Peter. Finally we have two Bonus Chapters for you. In Bonus Chapter 1 we show you George’s very cool guitar riff that comes at the end of the verse.  In Bonus Chapter 2 you learn the opening lead riff that the Beatles probably got from Chuck Berry.

Revolution

"Revolution," by The Beatles, was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was released on the B-side of  "Hey Jude" in August of 1968. The song had a loud, aggressive sound that featured distorted guitars and was different from nearly anything heard before. The distortion was accomplished by plugging the guitars directly into the recording console and overloading the channel.

The song went through several other versions, named Revolution 1,  Revolution 9, and Revolution 1, Take 20.  Revolution 1 was recorded first, and Lennon wanted it released as the single, but the other members of the band thought it was too slow.  Lennon decided to remake the song in a faster, louder, more raucous version.  The result was the distinctive sound of "Revolution," which reached #12 in the U.S., and is considered by some to be the precursor of heavy metal.

Other artists who covered "Revolution" include:

  • Thompson Twins
  • Blessid Union of Souls
  • Running Wild
  • Helloween
  • Stone Temple Pilots (live at Come Together: A Night for John Lennon's Words and Music benefit for World Trade Center victims.
  • Reckless Kelly (live)
  • Jim Sturgess (film Across the Universe)
  • Les Fradkin (instrumental)
  • Rascal Flatts (soundtrack for Evan Almighty).
