Hi Everyone,
To the beginner the world of guitar can be a pretty huge place. So many styes, such as folks, blues, jazz, rock, and bluegrass. Where does one start? Chords, scales, should you play with a pick or your fingers?
I have had alot of friends who want to play guitar ask me this question. Unless the person wants to play a specific style that involves the fingers, like classical, country blues, etc, i usually recommend they start with a pick. Though there are exceptions in the professional music world, its easier to strum and you will get more volume with a pick. You may decide a bit later down the line to use your fingers for rhythm and lead guitar playing, as Mark Knopfler does. But at least give a pick a try. I did not start using one till later in my guitar playing journey, and it took me a bit to get used to it.
One can play a majority of songs with just a handful of chords. In fact, one of our free song lesosns, Baby Please Don’t Go, actually uses just one chord, and it rocks. Its a great combination of driving rhythm playing combined with a few simple but effective lead guitar licks.
As far as chords learning the major and minor versions of A, B, D, E, G, F, and C chords should put you well on your way. Besides just learning those chords out of guitar chord book another fun way is to learn a handful of popular, easy songs. That way you are learning the chords by learning the songs, and at the same time its something that will be enjoyable to play. Alot of our lessons work in this way.
In the very beginning its going to be kind of frustrating because the tips of the fingers on your left hand (if you are playing guitar right handed), will hurt. It takes a bit of time to build up the calluses. It will take some time to switch from chord to chord, so the best practice is doing just that. Pick a few chords and practice switching between them. Strum a few times on each chord to make sure the strings are all ringing, and adjust your fingering if one string is being muffled.
So grab your instrument and get started.
