Staying Motivated on Guitar

Hi Everyone,

In this post i am going to tackle a topic that we all deal with from time to time, motivation. I think all musicians run up against a wall at some point or another, and just don’t feel like playing. Perhaps your day to day practice routine has gotten stale, or you just don’t feel as inspired as you used to. I know i run into this semi-frequently.

I think the main thought to keep in mind is that guitar playing should be fun. Isn’t that what attracted you to the instrument? You heard some rocking music that you like and wanted to learn to make that sound for yourself.

One good way to change things up is to just overhaul your practice routine. If you regularly warm up with scales perhaps put that on the back burner and warm up by working your way through a bluegrass or celtic fiddle tune. You’ll pick up some new musical phrases, be working around the fingerboard in a different way, and it will be a piece of music you can eventually play with others. Besides, fiddle tunes are just permutations of various scales anyway. Or if you regularly work on present day pop songs perhaps check out some of our Beatles guitar lessons. If a large part of your material consists of country blues perhaps start learning some basic jazz chords, as jazz is considered to have its roots in the blues. Its all about finding something to practice that is related to what you are presently doing, but different enough so that it gets you interested and excited.

What do you all do to stay motivated and moving forward in your playing? Post your thoughts to comments, or come on over to our guitar forum and start a discussion.

One Response to “Staying Motivated on Guitar”

  1. Aceves is far too willing to throw the ball right over the plate in any count, and its especially frustrating when the count is in his favor. I think we also forget how young he is. Hes learning just like our other young relievers. This isnt the Mexican league. Im not worried about himbecause this is what he is.
